EBITDA vs NOPAT: Which Starting Point Fits Your Valuation?

EBITDA is operating earnings before depreciation, amortization, interest and tax. NOPAT is operating profit after tax, before financing effects. Either can start a valuation, but both need a consistent bridge to cash flow.

Define the measures

EBITDA is not cash flow: it ignores capital expenditure, working-capital investment and cash taxes. NOPAT captures the tax burden on operating earnings but still needs noncash charges and reinvestment adjustments. Normalized tax assumptions may differ from accounting taxes.

EBIT = EBITDA − D&A
NOPAT = EBIT × (1 − operating tax rate)
UFCF = NOPAT + D&A − CapEx − ΔNWC

Worked example: two routes to the same cash flow

EBITDA is $10m, D&A $2m and the operating tax rate 25%, so EBIT is $8m and NOPAT $6m. With CapEx of $3m and a $1m increase in working capital, UFCF is $6m + $2m − $3m − $1m = $4m.

Starting from EBITDA gives the same $4m after subtracting operating taxes of $2m, CapEx of $3m and working-capital investment of $1m. D&A is used to establish taxable operating profit; do not deduct it from cash flow again without adding it back.

Distinguish operating valuation from company cash

DCF and APV start with unlevered cash flow. Company cash available after financing must also reflect cash interest and principal. If cash interest is deductible and the saving is fully usable, after-tax cash interest is interest × (1 − tax rate). Otherwise model the actual tax saving. Principal repayment does not create an interest tax shield.

When the distinction matters

Asset-heavy businesses can have large depreciation and maintenance CapEx, making EBITDA a poor proxy for cash generation. Asset-light companies can still consume cash through receivables, implementation costs and growth investment. The choice of starting measure does not remove the need for a complete cash bridge.

Negative growth and diophos inputs

A fall from $1.6m NOPAT to $0.2m is a decline, not growth. CAGR is meaningful for a positive beginning and ending value, but should not be forced across zero or negative earnings. diophos supports EBITDA and NOPAT inputs; its optional revenue build uses EBITDA. Keep model labels and the selected earnings multiple consistent.
