LBO Value Creation Bridge: Growth, Multiple Change and Deleveraging
A value creation bridge reconciles entry equity value to exit equity value through operating earnings, valuation multiple and net debt. It explains value change; it is not a direct additive decomposition of IRR.

An exact three-driver decomposition
Let E be EBITDA, M the EV/EBITDA multiple and ND net debt. Equity value is E × M − ND. One exact convention applies the entry multiple to EBITDA growth and applies the change in multiple to exit EBITDA. This assigns the growth/multiple interaction to the multiple component.
Growth contribution = (E_exit − E_entry) × M_entry Multiple contribution = E_exit × (M_exit − M_entry) Deleveraging contribution = ND_entry − ND_exit
Worked example: reconcile $30m to $110m
Entry EBITDA is $10m, entry multiple is 8.0x and entry net debt is $50m: entry equity is $30m. Exit EBITDA is $15m, exit multiple is 9.0x and exit net debt is $25m: exit equity is $110m.
Growth contributes $40m, multiple change $15m and deleveraging $25m. Together they add $80m to the $30m entry equity, reconciling exactly to $110m exit equity. A different interaction convention can change attribution without changing total proceeds.
Separate revenue growth from margin change
Because EBITDA equals revenue times EBITDA margin, earnings growth can be split again. One convention values revenue change at the entry margin and margin change at exit revenue, then applies the chosen enterprise-value multiple. Disclose the ordering and interaction treatment rather than presenting an allocation as uniquely correct.
Handle downside and other cash flows
Falling EBITDA, multiple contraction and increasing net debt should appear as negative contributions. Do not label a falling earnings series as “growth.” Fees, interim dividends, new equity, acquisitions and management participation require additional reconciliation items when moving from business equity value to actual investor returns.
Use the bridge without overstating it
A value bridge is not proof of causation or a standalone IRR calculation. IRR depends on cash-flow timing and MOIC on total proceeds versus invested capital. diophos presents a growth, multiple and deleverage attribution for Exit Multiple; read it alongside sponsor returns and the equity waterfall.
